ControlPoint Names Two Veterinarians to Advisory Panel

Campbell, Calif. – ControlPoint, Inc., an animal diagnostics company focused on developing tests that could be used by anyone, anywhere, has added two members to its advisory panel.

Drs. Stephen Cole and Tony Rumschlag were selected for their extensive experience in veterinary medicine, identifying unmet needs in the category. “I am very excited to add these two experienced professionals to our team,” said ControlPoint CEO Dr. Paula Walker. “Drs. Cole and Rumschlag will provide strategic guidance and direction for ControlPoint’s research and scientific programs, in addition to creating awareness and knowledge about ControlPoint’s canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC) test, including diagnosis and treatment of CIRDC. ControlPoint is bringing innovative new tools to veterinarians and others who care for pets, and these two seasoned professionals understand the unmet needs in veterinary medicine better than anyone.”

Formed in 2020, ControlPoint is currently developing a point-of-care test to detect multiple pathogens in a single unit by which veterinarians can be confident in their diagnosis of CIRDC, commonly known as kennel cough. Veterinarians will have same day test results allowing them to expand their practice, increase their margins and provide better patient care.

Dr. Stephen Cole is currently an Assistant Professor of Clinical Microbiology and Director of the Clinical Infectious Disease Diagnostic Lab at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet). His primary research interests seek to understand and mitigate the spread of extensively drug-resistant bacteria in companion animals and to establish best educational practices in antimicrobial stewardship to promote proper use of critical drugs.

A dedicated educator, Dr. Cole teaches microbiology across the basic science and clinical curricula and currently co-directs a novel course focused on evidenced-based, bench-to-bedside veterinary medicine. Dr. Cole’s primary clinical specialties include clinical bacteriology and mycology, antimicrobial therapy and selection, and infectious diseases. Dr. Cole is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiology (Bacteriology/Mycology, Immunology, Virology), the recipient of the Peggy Cotter Early Career Award from the American Society of Microbiology, several SAVMA teaching awards and has been named a One Health Scholar by the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges.

Dr. Tony Rumschlag, of Rumschlag Veterinary Consulting, works with veterinary hospitals, related businesses, and investors to solidify and grow brands. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Purdue University before practicing veterinary medicine in Atlanta, Ga.  After five years, he shifted his career focus, holding a variety of medical support and managerial roles at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Merial (now Boehringer Ingelheim) and Elanco.

For more than 15 years at Elanco, Dr. Rumschlag led the Pet Health Consulting Veterinarians team where he oversaw post-approval studies and supported the launch of new products to better manage disease conditions and improve the health of pets. He eventually joined the innovations team searching for new technologies to benefit animals. He has strong connections and relationships in many facets of veterinary medicine including state and national veterinary associations and veterinary colleges. Dr. Rumschlag has been invited to speak at several state and national veterinary conferences, as well as conferences in Southeast Asia. Dr. Rumschlag has provided leadership in various state and national veterinary organizations continuously since 1995, including the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association, Indiana Animal Health Foundation, American Veterinary Medical Association’s Committee for Veterinary Technician Education and Activities and the American Heartworm Society.
